For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.

As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:

"LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow."

So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue.

Also, as a FYI, LJ is giving paid users effected by the outage two weeks of paid time as compensation.

OMG, after fourteen years of living in Alphington I am moving to Yarraville!

And you would be surprised at how much stuff you can cram into a one bedroom flat with very little storage. I certainly have been as the boxes pile higher and higher and I realise that I'm only two thirds packed. Mind you most of the boxes contain books and since I'm trying to save the moving man's back, they're fairly small boxes so by necessity there's a lot of them.

My new house is lovely, though, double-fronted Victorian cottage with three bedrooms, two living areas, a small garden that's just enough to keep me occupied, a lime tree in the backyard and it's only meters away from the shops and train station. I'm sharing with Helen, who I went to New York with, and while it's been a looong time since I've lived with anyone, I'm kind of looking forward to it. I also need to buy a wardrobe because most the houses of its era it doesn't have built-ins and both Helen and I have a LOT or stuff. Thank god for the spare room, that's all I say!

Hellooo interwebs!

I'm still alive, although I'm finding that the longer I go without posting the harder it becomes to do so. I'm still sans internet at home, which seems to shock people more than I thought it would. When I tell them that I have no access to the WWW outside of work hours its like I've told then that I've cut off my left foot or something. Very odd.

So, what's been happening? Not a lot, really. I spent my birthday in a meeting in Wollongong, which was novel, have traveled back and forth to the old home town many times over the last month and ate too many party pies at my niece's fifth birthday party on Saturday. Seriously, I cannot look a meat pie in the eye at the moment. The very though of it makes me want to gag.

I've also been doing a lot of sewing. Dresses mostly. I can't get enough dresses these days and as a result my wardrobe it about to burst at the seams, so to speak. But still. DRESSES!!!!!

*ahem*

Not much happening on the fannish front. I seem to have lost all interest in fanfic, both reading and writing it, and I'm barely keeping up with the shows I do have a passing interest in. Put it this way: I've only just watched the first episode of season six of Supernatural. That's how far behind I am. I can't say if this lull is permanent or temporary. I'll just have to wait and find out.

*waves at you all*

ETA: So now I'm eating my words about the fanfic thing because I just found out that [livejournal.com profile] celli posted this perfect little Dan/Casey ficlet for me on AO3 and I just love it!

I'm a wee bit cross with myself because I think I've cut the pattern for my new dress a little too small. I thought the 36 would be okay, but looking at it now I should have gone for the next size up because it seems to me that it runs small. I'm going to have to get creative with it now because I've already bought the fabric for it and if I don't get at least one dress out of that pattern that'll be $28.00 down the drain!

It's pretty much the worst of time here in Australia at the moment as the Queensland flood crisis worsens each day. Even though the waters have started to recede in certain areas, it might be weeks or even months before some people can return to their homes and businesses. And worse still, the authorities are now faced with the grim task of searching through the debris for the bodies of those who weren't lucking enough to escape in time.

If you can please make a donation to the Queensland government's flood relief fund and to help our four-legged and feathered friends you can make a donation to the RSPC Qld. Any little thing that you spare will be greatly appreciated.

Hello intertubes!

Christmas is nearly upon us and I just wanted to wish you all a Merry Christmas! Tomorrow I'm heading off to parts foreign (well, the old home town and then the beach in New South Wales) for about ten days. I'm hoping the weather will hold because being stuck at the beach with three kids and four grumpy adults while it buckets down outside will not be fun.

A big thank you to all of you who have sent me cards this year. I'm afraid I've been very slack and have taken a year off the card thing, but will try and get back on track next year.

Anyway, have a great Christmas and new year and I'll catch you on the flip side!

Grrr, one of the major Australian banks has had a computer meltdown which means that all organisations who bank with it are unable to pay their staff. Guess who the university I work for banks with?

Fortunately I had savings to fall back upon. Some of my friends are not so lucky...

Since I rarely read fic these days I shouldn't be sad that one of my (formerly) favourite authors has deleted her journal and vanished into the ethernet. And yet strangely enough I am.
