I seem to have a cat perched precariously on my leg.

Meanwhile the screen on my laptop seems to have died. Not the laptop it's self, mind you, just the screen. Last night it started doing this odd flickering thing and then all of a sudden it went black. Now it will light up for a few seconds when I turn it on and then die.

I'm not sure what to do. On the one hand it is about eight years old and replacing it is not outside the realm of possibility. On the other hand it's got a lot of photos and music on it that I'd like to keep, not to mentioning of my fic and thing like my CV and a few work documents that I'd want to extract before discarding it. I might take it to one of the local computer doctors and see what they say. If it's not going to cost too much to extract my data I'll do that then look at buying a new one after Christmas. Because really, it's not like I don't have access to a computer at work if I really need one.

*sigh*

ETA - I now have a cat perched awkwardly on my chest. Clingy cat is clingy.

On a desktop it's trivial to take out the hard drive from the old machine, put it in a cradle and use it as an external hard drive. It's so easy, even we managed to do it unaided and we are not skilled in these matters.

I understand laptops are a bit more fiddly - physically - but it should still be a pretty simple matter and certainly something that a computer doc will be able to do with little effort. You'll then be able to access all your data on the drive and do with it as you will.

Yeah, I had that done with a dead laptop, and it was pretty quick and easy. And cheap - the guy did it for the price of the case.

Less awesomely, the drive decided a few weeks later that it didn't like having to draw power from the USB connection, so get your stuff off right away in case that happens.

Or,maybe the screen is actually the problem. We replaced the screen on ours. Cheap and easy!

Your lap cat has cool curly fur.
