these people seem fairly certain that they're in this for the long haul. My worry is that if I do shell out for one, I'll get over after a while and there goes my $200 quid!

That's pretty much my feeling too.

Glad the database subject has stopped eating your brain! I don't know how you survived a subject like that. I went off IT the moment I started Info Techology in Libraries in my Grad Diploma!
