Gah, if there's one thing I hate more than shelving, it's having to ring people and tell them that the credit card they used to pay for their copying has been declined. I'm a librarian, not a debt collector!

And so we had yet another going away party at work today, making it the third one I've been to in as many weeks. I don't know what's going on around the place at the moment. We've lost about five senior members of staff since Christmas, including my boss, with another couple to go shortly.

Actually I do have some idea. The whole division is going through a restructure, and no one know's what they'll be doing in twelve months time. They could be in a completely different role to the one they're used to and for a few people who are only a year or so away from retirement anyway, I think they're opting out now rather than having to work in a job they know little about for twelve months then leaving. I know one person left due to ill health, and another has family commitments, but the others are seeing it as a natural resolution to their life in full-time employment.

In the meantime us worker drones are left to carry on regardless, and I'm feeling very much at sixes and sevens at the moment. L and myself have been given this big responsibility to keep the department running until they hire new people, and I know people are watching to see how we cope. I'm so afraid I'm going to trip up and make some terrible mistake that no one will want me to shelve their books in the future, let alone run their library.

Yes, I know I can do it. I just have to knuckle down and not let the turkeys get to me.

Yeah.
