My mum just got fired.
And when I say fired, I mean the the St Vincent De Paul charity shop where she has been volunteering on Thursdays for the last 20 years brought in some new area manager who proceeded to yell at and generally upset all the little old lady volunteers who work there, then fire them on the spot.
Apparently (well, according to my mum who can be a little one sided in these things, but still...) they weren't 'reliable'. They'd come and go as they pleased, and would think of nothing about taking a day off, despite the fact that a) THEY'RE VOLUNTEERS! and the whole point of being a volunteer is that you give your time when you have it, but you're not bound to any strict timetable or roster, and b) most of them are over 60, and some, like my mum, are in their mid 80's and no one desevers to be treated like that.
I'm just completely appalled. It's supposed to be a charitable organisation and these women have given their time and effort, some of them for many many years, in an effort to give something back to the community. And to have this women waltz in, verbally abuse them and then order them out of the shop is beyond the pale. My sister has already rung their head office and is working on getting hold of the CEO. He won't know what hit him when she's through with him. My sister is very scary, in that cool, controlled way that I totally lack, when she's mad. I was going to email them, but I think I'll be composing a very miffed letter over the weekend instead.
