Back to work for me today. Bit of a shock to the system, I don't mind saying, particularly when I discovered that all but one of the on-campus cafes, including my favourite cafe next to the library, were closed today which meant no coffee!
Oh. My. God.
I knew the cafe next to the library would be closed, but I had thought that at least one or two coffee-providing food outlets in the student union would be open. So I wandered across at about quarter-to-tenish, as is my wont, only to be confronted by the fact that practically everything except the chemist and the union help desk was closed, and last I heard the chemist hadn't started selling coffee, at least not yet! The kind ladies at the help desk informed me that the cafe next to the pizza shop in Deakin Court was open and they even had coffee! Of course by the time I got there half the population of the university had also arrived, but I dutifully lined up because it was my first day back at work and I NEED COFFEE!
This was all very well and good until one of the (two) girls working there finally announced that they were out of dairy and they only had soy milk left. I don't think I've ever seen a room empty faster.
I trudged back to the library, feel lost and alone and totally bereft. Somehow I made it through my three hour desk shift, running on the smell of an oily rag and the half cup of tea I had with breakfast until I finally escaped and practically ran to Lygon street to buy the biggest, strongest cappuccino known to man.
Needless to say, when I get back from lunch I was less than pleased to find out that University House was open and that they had plenty of real milk. Although my informant did say that she'd had to queue for nearly half an hour to get her caffeine fix.
Tomorrow, I'm not taking an chances. I'm going to get coffee on my way into work. I don't want another repeat of today, thankyouverymuch.
