OMG, I love Johnny Depp!
Yes, this old news, however I'm having a bit of a Depp renaissance because last weekend I found the first season of 21 Jump Street on DVD in Cash Converters for $20 and how could I resist?
Wee!baby!Johnny is so very very adorable with his bouffant hair, his tight tight jeans and the slightly hammy acting technique that he thankfully grew out of. Plus, Hanson/Penhall! I remember loving their friendship back in the day, but now that I'm looking at it through slash-coloured glasses... Good god, the most unlikely duo ever and yet Johnny and Peter DeLuise have such great chemistry together and no I'm not looking for fic, I'm not looking for fic, I'm not...
*sheesh*
It's great fun playing spot the then up-and-coming actor (oh look, there's Josh Brolin!) and of course the entire show is a paean to the eccentricities of 80's fashions. I remember being 16 and wanting all of Judy Hoffs' wardrobe and trying out various gels and mousses to get my fringe (shut UP) to swoop over my forehead like hers did. I'm not sure about the midriff tops on the guys, though, and the husband of one of my sister's friends still dresses a little like Harry Ioki, but he's from Laos and has always had great dress sense so he can carry is off. However I am so thankful for the day fashion designers world-wide decided the shoulder pad was dead and buried so we aren't still walking around looking like rugby players.
However I do have one complaint; the soundtrack! They've stripped all the great 80's tunes and replaced them with this bland, soulless background guff. One of the best things about the show (besides the hot boys) was the fantastic music they used in each episode, but there's none of it to be found. I guess negotiating the music rights for the DVD release was either too complicated to too expensive or both, so they did what they had to do. But still, I wants my Concrete Blonde and I wants it now!
