Please spare a thought for the people who have lost their possessions, homes and their lives in the Victorian bushfires this weekend. More than sixty people have died and the authorities are predicting that the death toll will climb to over one hundred once the clean-up process begins. The towns of Marysville and Kinglake have been all but destroyed, and the fires are still threatening dozens of homes and communities throughout Victoria. I remember the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983 and I'd never in my life seen anything so terrible, but this is just horrific.

ETA: An appeal has been launched to help victims of the fire. You can make donations through the Australian Red Cross.

ETA 2: The death toll has risen to 84 and includes former channel nine news reader Brian Naylor and his wife Moiree.

*hugs* - not that they're much use to anyone, but I don't have much else. Mother Nature can be an evil bitch some of the time. Quite a lot of the time, actually.

Mother Nature is being a particularly nasty bitch at the moment. Floods in Queensland, fires in New South Wales and Victoria, a heat wave South Australia and drought all over. Where does it all end??

From the news today, I wasn't entirely correct in blaming Mother Nature for the fires (though she can take the rap for the rest of it) - apparently the fires were started deliberately?

I. Can't. Even.

*more hugs* Bearing in mind that my geography is non-existent, are you and the folks in the Old Home Town safe?

No, unfortunately Mother Nature isn't entirely at fault, which is totally unbelievable. Who would do such a thing???

There weren't any fires near the old home town, thank god. The worse hit areas are around Gippsland and the Yarra Ranges. Several small towns have been raised to the ground and some areas are still under threat. It's just horrific.

Wow. That's really awful. :( Have they been able to contain the fires yet?

No, they're still going in some areas and the weather conditions are so changeable at the moment anything can happen. The government are treating it like a terrorist attack, it really is that devastating.

It's just jaw-droppingly awful, as far as I can tell from the news reports. Unbelievable that it looks like it was arson. Hope you and everyone you love stay safe.

Everyone is just reeling, whether they've been directly affected by the fires or not. It's terribly unbelievable you just don't know what to think.
