curse of the wip

Gah, one of the big problems I'm having since my head-long plunge back into fandom - and into a popular fandom with lots of fic to consume at that - is the curse of the WIP.

You know how it is? Where you start reading something really, really great, however in your haste to get to it you neglected the bit that says 'chapter 9/?' and the last update was over six months ago and after some investigation you discover that the author has either vanished from the interwebs completely or else they've apparently moved on because they've churned out a number of stories in a totally different fandom, thus dashing your hopes hopes that this Really Good Fic that had you awake until three o'clock in the morning will ever be finished. Or worse still, where you're assured by the author's notes that the fic is finished and that they're just polishing up the last couple of chapters before posting them, only for the updates to die off and the story to just linger on a cliffhanger for WEEKS with nothing happening...

It burns, my sweets, it just burns!

And please, don't get me started on the fics that are on everyone's recs lists and are exactly the thing you want to read, only you can't get to them because the author has everything locked down so tight you'd have an easier time stealing the crow jewels!

Gah!
