I'm home from the wilds of Canberra, having survived my weekend away.
I left at 4pm on Friday. A picked me up and drove me to the airport, which was very nice of him because otherwise I would have had to take a very expensive taxi ride or else somehow get up to Spencer St with my (rather heavy) suitcase to get the Sky Bus. The flight was uneventful and relatively short, so nothing worth reporting there. C met me at the airport and drove me back to the serviced apartment which he calls home at the moment. There we got changed and went on to meet some of his work friends for dinner and proceeded to drink ourselves under the table. Oh my god, we were like fish! I have this huge bruise on my leg from falling off my high heels, and C has no recollection at all about the latter half of the evening.
Having stumbled home at 2am, I managed to rouse myself at 9am so I could get ready to meet the delightful
mergatrude and the Dude for coffee. She was very wonderful and quite tolerant of my somewhat incoherent state and the Dude had the best pair of Thomas the Tank Engine sandals in the world! We choofed off to the National Museum of Australia which failed to have hot chips at 11am, but we got to see some cool dinosaur bones and fossil samples and indulge in a little fanish chit-chat over coffee before
mergatrude took me for a tour around her work and dropped me back at the apartment.
That afternoon C and I battled the flies as we ate lunch in Manuka, then he took me up to Fyshwick and dragged me into one of the adult superstores that are scattered around the area. The slasher in me found the whole experience highly amusing, although some of the thigh-high boots were worrisome in their plasticness. The DVD section scared me a little, and if I ever get married I hope no one ever, EVER buys me the 'Fun Hen's Night Veil' adorned with condoms and lube. I'm just saying.
Our Saturday night was a little more sedate than Friday. We had dinner in Manuka than drove up to the Telstra Tower to see the city lights. The upper viewing platform was a thing of terror for some one as afraid of heights as I am, but the lower section which is fully enclosed wasn't too bad. We nearly got blown off by the wind, though, and I thanked god I had decided to wear my hair in pigtails that day because I suspect I'd still be combing out the tangles if I hadn't. After we'd had enough of the tower we were both pretty pooped so we went home and watched the tail end of The Wizard of Oz on TV, then watched the Children in Need Doctor Who Special, which was entirely squeeful and just proved that David Tennant is probably a bigger fangirl than the rest of us.
We retired at the ungodly hour of 10.30pm and arose to a fine and very sunny day. Breakfast was a bit of a letdown when the cafe drastically overcooked my eggs, but the coffee I got at the bagel shop was just what the doctor ordered. We then spent the rest of the day doing the tourist thing at Old Parliament House, New Parliament House, the National War Memorial and another visit to the Museum (which C hadn't seen). At the War Memorial a Japanese tourist mistook us both for locals, which amused us no end, and I could not get over the incongruity of finding a chip machine lurking around the sedate and proper corridors of power at new parliament house.
After all that sight seeing in temperatures that reached the high 30's we were both exhausted so we went back to the apartment for a while and just lazed about until it was time to take me to the airport. of course it chose that moment to start raining and my flight was delayed due to weather. To make up this we rounded off the visit with a beer at the bar, then my flight was called and on I hopped. Despite the weather the journey home was smooth and I disembarked to find that Melbourne was just as hot as Canberra. I nearly caused an incident in the pick-up lane when I was struggling to make it to where A & O were waiting for me, but we managed to thwart the scary security guard who was about to tell them
to move on and they took me home to a stifling flat, a mound of laundry and no food in the cupboard.
I've been trying to catch up with my flist, but I don't think it's going to happen, especially since I'm going out again tonight and have to spend tomorrow evening cleaning the flat for the house inspection I have on Wednesday.
