I am really not surprised about the David Tennant news. It's been on the cards for a long time and it was just a matter of when, not if, he would make the announcement. I know people are upset, but if you look at it from his point of view - while it has been his best career opportunity to date - if he'd stayed any longer he really would be in danger of being hopelessly typecast. As it is he'll carry the moniker of 'Former Doctor Who, David Tennant' around with him for the rest of his professional life so he really doesn't have much of a choice if he want's to keep his career on track.

But it's really it's the nature of the series. Actors come and go from both lead and supporting roles, and have done so ever since Susan decided to stay on Earth and William Hartnell called it a day. I bet the fans weren't too please about Patrick Troughton taking over, or Jon Perwtee or Tom Baker, even though he was considered the most popular Doctor until Dave came along. This is why the show has lasted for as long as it has, the hiatus not withstanding. Because the whole thing doesn't have to come crashing to an end if the lead actor departs; they just go out find someone new. And you have to admit, he's given it a good run compared to past incumbents. So don't come down too heavy on the guy just because he's decided he's gone as far as he can in this job and it's time to move onto the next opportunity. Wouldn't you do the same?
