You may recall me mentioning the fact that I recently acquired a roommate in the form of a small brown rodent.

I have to say that as far as roommates go, Mousey-Mousey is pretty low maintenance. (S)He doesn't leave dirty dishes in the sink for days on end, and there's no loud music at night when I'm trying to go to sleep. But there's also the fact that I didn't ask Mousey-Mousey to move in in the first place, and I have to draw the line when I'm sitting on the couch putting on my shoes and Mousey-Mousey shoots out from under it between my feet.

Hence my recent purchase of a humane mouse trap and a jar of peanut butter.

I hope (s)he likes the crunchy kind.

My grandmother had a mouse in her house for awhile, and couldn't get rid of it with traps. One day she opened the dishwasher and saw the mouse in there, so she closed the door and switched it on. After the cycle had finished, she opened the door and didn't see anything, so she put it on again for good measure and hasn't see the mouse since...

Also (in the spirt of 'it can always be worse') I was out at dinner the other night and our host was telling us about a girl who was living in a share house which had a mouse, and wanted to know if mice could live in mattresses because she was hearing scritching sounds from her mattress as night. (Although, a mouse running between your feet when you have no shoes on? That's pretty bad. Eeep.)

Mmm. Crunchy peanut butter...

I don't have a dishwasher, so I'm hoping the trap works. I really dont want to have to kill it, so I'll see how this one goes before I try something else. The trap recommends using peanut butter. I was thinking of strawberry jam, but hopefully the peanut butter will be enough. And if it does end up in my mattress, then the mouse is toast!

I have heard that mice like peanut butter before, actually. (At the very least it's probably healthier for them, which, of course, is an important consideration.)

I've heard that as well. I hardly ever buy peanut butter, but if it will help get rid of the mouse, bring it on!

Mice look so cute, that's the thing, you feel guilty. As you would not if it were, eg, cockroaches. But the things they do in your house are so horrid, and that's not even starting on them weeing on everything, you have to harden your heart.

Although if you do manage to get rid of it humanely, so much the better.

It was the idea that it's using the bottom of my fridge as a toilet that finally made me take action. I've got the trap out so Mousey-Mousey can get used to it being around, and hopefully the peanut butter will lure it into it's depths.
