You know how I've been doing the will I/won't I thing about buying a new car over the last few weeks? Well, for reasons that I cannot explain at this juncture, I have decided that I will indeed be buying a new car. To that end I am now $5000 in debt to the credit union at work and I went for a couple of test drives today.

First cab off the rank was a red 1990 Corolla Seca hatchback. It was cute enough from a distance and it drove well, but the duco had faded somewhat so it really could do with a respray, and it was a bit battered around on the inside. Nothing too bad, but I could tell from the go get that it would irritate me after a while so I'm not going to bother with that one.

Next in line was a silver 1991 Holden Nove sedan. Very neat looking inside and out. Obviously well cared for and it also drove quite nicely. It had an alarming tendency to wobble as it was getting up to speed, but it might just need a wheel alignment to fix that. They want $4000 for it, which is well with in my budget, but as far as looks go it's a bit boring and looks like something my mother would drive. Even so, I might get my mum's mechanic to check it out because the power steering and air conditioning are quite an attraction.

Tomorrow I'm (hopefully, if it hasn't been sold since Friday) checking out another Corolla at a car yard up the road from me. It's also got the power steering and A/C thing happening, but it has a sportier chassis than the Nova, so if it's neater on the inside than the one I saw today maybe I'll be onto a winner.

I know I'm probably doing this at the worst possible time, what with petrol expected to hit $1.40 a litre in a matter of days, but sometimes you've just got to throw caution to the wind. Also, I never been car shopping before. The only cars I've ever owned were both hand-me-downs from my sister so I've never had to actively look for a car to buy. It's actually kind of fun!
