I've eaten a lot of soup today, as one does when one is feeling poorly and one can't be bothered dealing with more complicated food. I've also had ice cream and a muffin. Yeah, a healthy diet really is at the top of my priority list at the moment.

The doctor was nice and told me I had a virus, which came as no surprise, and gave me tomorrow off as well, which I am totally taking. She also gave me these antihistamines for my blocked ears and scratchy eyes which are supposed to make me drowsy so I'm hoping they'll knock me out when I go to bed. I didn't sleep very well last night and I foresee another morning filled with the pleasant buzz of circular saws so I'm hoping they do the trick.

I'm not sure why but I'm currently looking at used car listings. I have it in mind that when I buy a new car I'd like to get one of the new Mini Coopers, although judging by the prices I'm seeing it's not going to happen cos $35,000+ for a used car is a wee bit outside of my price range. But they are very cute, especially the red ones with the go faster stripes. I can just see me tootling around town in one those!

Dear NCIS

Nice use of the file folder in the morgue scene. What to do with that pesky genital area on a naked corpse is always a problem, especially on national television. I am pleased to see you are thinking laterally.

Much love

Me

But seriously, how great is DiNozzo? Yeah, he can be a giant ass with the mentality of a thirteen year-old boy a lot of the time. But he's also smart and insightful and compassionate and so very loyal to his friends and co-workers. Gotta love him just for that, really.

Okay, bed time for Laylee, me thinks.

You know how I've been doing the will I/won't I thing about buying a new car over the last few weeks? Well, for reasons that I cannot explain at this juncture, I have decided that I will indeed be buying a new car. To that end I am now $5000 in debt to the credit union at work and I went for a couple of test drives today.

First cab off the rank was a red 1990 Corolla Seca hatchback. It was cute enough from a distance and it drove well, but the duco had faded somewhat so it really could do with a respray, and it was a bit battered around on the inside. Nothing too bad, but I could tell from the go get that it would irritate me after a while so I'm not going to bother with that one.

Next in line was a silver 1991 Holden Nove sedan. Very neat looking inside and out. Obviously well cared for and it also drove quite nicely. It had an alarming tendency to wobble as it was getting up to speed, but it might just need a wheel alignment to fix that. They want $4000 for it, which is well with in my budget, but as far as looks go it's a bit boring and looks like something my mother would drive. Even so, I might get my mum's mechanic to check it out because the power steering and air conditioning are quite an attraction.

Tomorrow I'm (hopefully, if it hasn't been sold since Friday) checking out another Corolla at a car yard up the road from me. It's also got the power steering and A/C thing happening, but it has a sportier chassis than the Nova, so if it's neater on the inside than the one I saw today maybe I'll be onto a winner.

I know I'm probably doing this at the worst possible time, what with petrol expected to hit $1.40 a litre in a matter of days, but sometimes you've just got to throw caution to the wind. Also, I never been car shopping before. The only cars I've ever owned were both hand-me-downs from my sister so I've never had to actively look for a car to buy. It's actually kind of fun!

I don't believe I'm saying this, but I'm thinking about buying a car. It's been about five years since I last owned a car and I've done pretty well without one all that time. But this weekend I went to the old home town, and getting there and back I had to suffer through a series of public transport failures that culminated in it pouring with rain while I walked home (in the dark in the middle of winter) from the train station. Granted I might still be a little tetchy about the various ups and downs of the Victorian public transport system (it could also be the PMS that's making me eat insane amounts of bread and honey), but sometimes you just have to draw the line.

Of course then I think about what it would mean to own a car again and to this end I've come up with a list of pros and cons:

Pro: No more walking home from train stations on rainy nights in the middle of winter.
Con: Having to navigate Melbourne traffic that is always a little bit more insane than usual on rainy nights in the middle of winter. That scares me more than walking home in the rain does.

Pro: I can go where I want, when I want, and I can do things like grocery shopping and going to gym more easily.
Con: Since I've not had a car I've either walked or ridden everywhere, thus resulting in the fact that I'm fitter now than I ever have been. If I get a car my natural laziness is bound to take over and where once I would have walked/ridden to the shops I would probably opt to drive and loose all of the health benefits not having a car has brought me.

Pro: I know I can easily qualify for a loan.
Con: They're predicting that petrol is will hit $1.30 a litre by the end of the year. Last time I owned a car it was about 75 cents a litre and back then I thought that was ridiculously expensive. Plus there's all the on-going costs of owning a car, like registration, insurance, maintenance, etc. With my bike, if it needs a service it costs $50.00 including parts. For a car I'd be looking at about $200-300 minimum.

Pro: I could drive to work if I needed to
Con: I can't park at work because there's still a 7 year waiting list for on-campus parking for which I've never put my name down, and very few all-day spaces for of-campus parking in the area, so I'd end up having to park my car half-way to home anyway. Also, you don't get parking tickets with a bike.

Pro: Bikes are environmentally sustainable forms of transport.
Con: Cars aren't.

Okay, I'll think about it.
