Dan: I read "Beowulf" in three hours.
Casey: How could you read "Beowulf" in three hours?
Dan: I didn't read it, really, but I saw the movie.
Casey: Uh, but there's no movie of "Beowulf".
Dan: What the hell movie did I see?
Sports Night: The Sweet Smell of Air
But lo and behold, Casey, you have now been proven wrong because there is a movie of Beowulf and I went and saw it last night. In 3D no less!
There was a lot more nudity than I was expecting. And Ray Winstone's CGI abs were slightly scary, but it was a rollicking good adventure and Grendel was one of the most genuinely creepy movie monsters I have ever seen. I didn't think Robin Wright Penn translated very well into CGI (her face was very rectangular, much like Casey's) but Anthony Hopkins was fabulous, as always, and Angelia Jolie was suitable seductive as Grendel's mother. The fight with the dragon was just spectacular and I liked the way the movie ended on an ambiguous note, which is somewhat unusual for an industry that assumes it's audience is incapable of accepting a resolution that isn't purely back and white.
Aside from that, life is somewhat blah. I can't wait for the Christmas break and not to have to go to work for a week, and I've eaten so much crap food I'm surprised I'm not the size of a house! My decorating project is coming along, but I've fallen down badly on getting the Christmas cards done so at this rate you may not get them until Easter!
Speaking of Easter, I'm thinking of going to Perth round about then. C will be working over there by then and I've never been to WA. Plus, my birthday is Easter Sunday next year so it would be a nice little B-Day treat for myself.
Gah, it's hot. I've had to bring my big fan up from the storeroom for the first time this summer but it's not making much of a difference. Not sure how I'm going to sleep tonight or what I can wear to work tomorrow. But my flat smells lovely because I've been making mini Christmas fruitcakes to give as gifts at work, and I've decided that glacé cherries soaked for two days in brandy are the best thing ever!
