Now I know why there were helicopters hovering around last night: Locals Shocked by Lawyer Murder.

That poor family, what they're going through right now is unbelievable. And I just cannot believe that such a terrible thing like this can happen so close to my home. I shop there, practically every second day! My favourite cake shop is only a few doors doen from the office, and I always get take-away coffee from the cafe next door because they're slightly cheaper than the bakery up the road and the barrista knows my order off by heart. I remember when that office was the real estate agency before they moved across the road to the shop where the MS opp shop was before they moved into the shop next to Bakers Delight.

The worst thing about all of this is, is that Fairfield is such a boring, white-bread kind of place where parents can let their kids play on the street and walk to school on their own. This sort of thing does not happen in places like Fairfield and I hate that we're probably all going to be a little bit more suspicious of strangers and a little less friendly toward our neighbours because of it.

I heard about that on the radio while on my way home and thought of your post about the helicopters.

What's the world coming to, really.

*sigh*

It's truly disturbing to think that this was all happening while I was faffing around on LJ last night. Really makes you wonder.

When you posted about the helicopters it was eerily familiar to me, and this makes it doubly so: Last year, at a concert in the park we were beset by helicopters to a point of annoyance and distraction. It was a Monday holiday, and when my kids returned to school on Tuesday we found out that the copters were out looking for the man who had killed two people and injured a third.

One of the people murdered was a friend of ours, the dad of a classmate of my daughters. The murderer was someone he knew, and we had met. He went on to kill one or two more people the next day before killing himself.

It was huge news and hit very close to home. The "city" we live in is, according to the FBI, the safest big city in the country (when it is not, the city that he shot up more people and himself in, usually is). It is an unnerving awakening to discover that you are not as safe as you thought.

(I just mentioned your post to my hubby and he reminded me that our murdered friend was a lawyer too, like I said, eerily familiar)

Now there's all sorts of speculation emerging about his business dealings and links to underworld figures. All I can think of is his poor wife and children. They don't need all that crap on top of what they're already dealing with.

It is an unnerving awakening to discover that you are not as safe as you thought.

Certainly is. I've gotten into the habit of not locking my front door, even when I go to bed. Won't be doing that any more, I can tell you.

That's awful. That kind of thing shakes you to the bone, doesn't it? There's not much I can say that's of any use so I'll just nick from Casey - the human mind cannot be denied. It seems impossible, but the community can and will move on, and may even be stronger for it.

I do want to beleive the world isn't a bad place. Then I watch the news and things like this happen so close to home that I'm not so sure any more :~\
