Huh, the power just went out. at first I thought it was just me, but I checked all the fuses and they were fine, so I went down to see if anyone else in my building had lost their power and my neighbour told me it has gone out all over Melbourne.

I wouldn't mind so much if it weren't so hot, but no power means no fan, and no fan means a very sweaty Laylee :~\

I'm working off battery on my laptop at the moment, but that's only good for about three hours so I hope it doesn't take too long for them to fix things. Not to mention the potential disaster that is my freezer.

ETA: The power's back on, although it's randomly gone out again a couple of times, but never for more than five minutes. Apparently it's due to the bushfires knocking out an interconnector in Victoria's north-east. It's going to be another very hot day tomorrow, and there's no relief in sight. This map can give you an idea of the worst affected areas.

Note to self: buy candles or a torch, preferably both.

Power cuts are horrible - and scary, especially nowadays. You really realise how totally dependent you are on technology. No light, no telly, no pooter, no CD player, no radio (unless you have a wind-up one); you probably can't cook or even make tea (we have a gas hob, that we can light with matches, so we're a bit better off there), the water goes cold - not to mention, as you said, the fridge and the freezer.

So that was me being cheering. Huh. I hope the power comes back on soon.

My pooter is okay as long as the battery lasts, and it's too hot for warm drinks anyway. Plus, I'd only just finished cooking dinner so at least I didn't have to deal with half-cooked pork skewers. I was making fritatatatatata for my lunch when the power cut out and now I have no way of finishing it because, of course, electric oven!

I think today was just a really horrible, crap day for everyone. Something in the alignment of the planet (or some such bollix) perhaps. I would like to think that this means we're due something nice tomorrow, but.

Well, according to The Age, it's all because of the bushfire. Some of the power lines were affected and hence blackout.

Thank god my place wasn't affected!

Yeah, that's what I heard. Funny thing is, my friends who live five minutes away in Clifton Hill were unaffected while I was sitting in the almost dark!

Just after reading that my pooter cut out and I thought perhaps it was infectious, but it turned out to be a rare fit of pique on the part of the pooter and not a power cut at all.

Hope it gets sorted soon.

It came back on just under an hour later. And since its daylight savings here it wasn't so bad. At least I wasn't driving in the areas where traffic lights went out.

The bushfire took out power to our area - I was out driving with Younger Sister (to buy a new mobile, yay!) and a whole heap of the traffic lights were out in the area. The final right hand turn getting home was a bit hairy!

I heard there was a bit of traffic chaos. And a lot of trains have been cancelled today as well.

Yay, new phone!

Our power was out between about 4-5pm. Definitely not fun in this heat.

Ours was only out for a short while, but I really did miss my fan during that 50 minutes!

Yeah, it always seems to go out right in the hottest/coldest time of the year. We had an outage last summer (July-ish) that lasted 24 hours. Which wasn't too bad considering that others in the area took 3 and 4 days to get restored.

And a dorky kind of related story. I have a garage door opener. Which is electric. Which won't work when there's no power. I had figured, I'd just go off to the gym and shower, then go on to work. But when I walked out to the garage, I realized I couldn't get my car out. Woops. Apparently there is a release mechanism that's supposed to have a bright red dangly cord on it which someone thoughtfully removed. And the EX never explained this fact to me when he installed the thing. But there is a happy ending. I just called my son and he came over to free me from the garage. Guess he helped put the thing in. Doh!

It's the bushfires that are knocking us about, but with the high temperatures set to continue until the weekend it may even get worse.

After I posted this I was got a text form a friend (with power) asking me over for cheesecake. Fortunately I'd already decided to ride my bike because the electric gates to the yard wouldn't open!

Its scary how dependent we are on electric power. Hope the cheesecake was good. And, smart girl you are, you worked those calories off by biking over and back!
