It's funny how well SN fits itself to the men-at-war and women-holding-the-fort scenario - there was a Remix fic along similar (but not by any means identical) lines that I like very much. I love this as well - it's so fresh and original, and really brings out the strength of the characters. They're women in charge, and they'll get through. And the glimpse of the boys on their last day before going off to god-knows-what was heartbreaking. A lovely job - well done.

I'm glad you posted your author's note, though, because I couldn't for the life of me see how you got here from a picture of a child's swing!

I had completely missed the swing analogy. I was going on the loss of innocence and having to grow up too soon.

They're women in charge, and they'll get through.

See, that's what I was thinking. Reading the book I used as a reference, the women they interviewed for it all took on some pretty amzing jobs during the war. Many if them had never worked before and yet there they were, suddenly building aeroplanes and welding troop ships together!
