Courtesy of The Australian Woman's Weekly Cookbook, circa 1970, this is one of the best cold weather recipes ever!
Caramel Dumplings
Dumplings:
1 1/4 cups self-raising flour
1 oz butter
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup milk
Sift flour into basin, rub in butter, add sugar. Add combined milk and vanilla and stir well until combined.
Sauce:
1 oz butter
1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
1 1/2 cups of water
Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan, stir constantly until boiling. Reduce heat. Drop tablespoons of dumpling dough into simmering caramel sauce, cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Serve warm with cream or ice cream.
