So, I have this dilemma. There's this job opening at work that I'd like to go for, however the woman who has been acting in the position for the past year will also be going for it and even though she'll probably get it, what if she doesn't and I do and I then have to be her boss?

Should I try for the position anyway and see what happens, or should I let it go and wait for something else to open up? I'm inclined to go for it because who knows when the next decent thing will come along, but I don't want to cause any bad blood between D and myself because she really is very nice and I'm a big wuss who hates upsetting people. This will also mean that I'll finally have to tell my boss that I'm looking at other positions - and BTW, can I have a reference please? - something I've been putting off for fear of her not taking the news well and making my life difficult in return.

*sigh*

Rock, meet hard place.

Yep, sometimes being a grown-up is not much fun at all.

ETA: I wrote some Sports Night comment porn for [livejournal.com profile] phoebesmum. Since the entry is friends only, here 'tis:

Better, Dan/Casey rated P for porn.

"Shall I kiss it and make it better?" Casey asked, reaching out to take the hand Dan had whacked against the night stand.

"It's nothing," Dan said, but didn't resist as Casey's long finger wrapped around his wrist.

"I'm sure," Casey murmured. He turned Dan's hand palm-up, tracing along the heart line with his index finger. Danny twitched and made a sound deep in his throat that may have been a groan but could have been so much more. Casey replaced his finger with his lips, pressing a kiss to Danny's palm then lightly flicking his tongue against the sensitive skin.

Dan's groan turned into a moan, and suddenly Casey found himself flat on his back, Dan rubbing against him as he did his best to kiss the air out of Casey's lungs.

They lay like that for a few minutes, kissing lazily and rubbing against each other, enjoying the closeness, the friction, before Casey decided he needed more, he needed so much more. So he hooked his leg across Danny's legs, pulling him closer before he flipped them over so he was on top and Danny was staring up at him, eyes bright and a lazy smile spreading across his face as Casey let his hands slide down Dan's shoulders and chest and along his flanks before they came to rest on his thighs.

Sensing his intent, Dan shifted his legs further apart as Casey levered himself up a little. With some pushing and manoeuvring and an almost fit of the giggles they finally got themselves into position with Dan's legs slung over Casey's shoulders and an intently expectant look on his face.

"You sure?" Casey asked like he always did, because the last person he wanted to force into something they didn't want to do was Danny.

"Yeah," Dan panted back, "Yeah, Casey, go."

So Casey went, sliding in slick and slow, doing his damnedest to make this as good for Danny as it currently was for him. When he was fully inside Dan and they went both still for a moment, both of them slightly awed and very overwhelmed by the enormity of this thing between them.

"God, Casey, move!" Dan ground out between clenched teeth.

And Casey did.

I'm an even bigger wuss than you. I would let it pass. It would then, of course, turn out to be the opportunity of a lifetime and I would regret it forever.

Since I don't believe I have ever made a correct decision in my life, probably doing the exact opposite of whatever I advise would be the wisest course.

I had at least three people ask me if I was going to go for it so I'm pretty sure I will. I meet all the selection criteria and it might even jolt my boss into realising that if she want's to keep me she's going to have to do something about making my job more interesting otherwise she'll have no staff left at all!

Any chance you get to move up and expand yourself, so to speak, you should take. There is nothing but win/win here. If you do get it, then you get the opprotunity to learn new things and get a little management experience. If you don't get it there's nothing lost, just a little time. And if your current boss says something you can always just say, I thought I'd give it a shot and see what happened. You know, nothing ventured nothing gained kind of thing.

So, go for it Kiddo!

Go for the job. It's an internal promotion type-thing, so you might as well put your hand up. It's also an easier way to ease into it with your boss because you can phrase it that you don't particularly want to leave, etc, etc, but you'd really like to try x-task, and you don't think you'll get it, but you figured you might as well give it a shot. (I was actually amazed how supportive the bosses here were when I applied to another prison. Regardless of the fact I didn't get it, people seem to be more comfortable about you applying for an internal promotion than an entirely new job.)
