Wow, I'd forgotten how depressing season six of Buffy was. Angst angst angst everywhere. It's like the writers and produces set out to create the biggest angst-fest on the whole planet! To whit:

- Giles has the Watcher's version of an existential crises moves back to England.
- Willow and Tara break up then Willow becomes addicted to magic and nearly destroys the world after Tara is shot and killed.
- Buffy is miserable from having been yanked away from heaven and tries to fill the void by having degrading sex with Spike.
- Spike, for his part, is completely in love with Buffy and knows that she's using him for sex yet he can't stay away.
- Dawn feels like she's being ignored by all her friends and family and becomes a kleptomaniac.
- Xander gets cold feet and dumps Anya at the alter which makes her return to her vengeance demon ways.
- And then there's the whole Nerd trio thing that's alternately annoying and compelling and then down-right nasty toward the end.

It's a wonder the whole cast and crew didn't require many hours of therapy after filming that particular season. God knows I'm going to have surround myself with pictures of fluffy bunnies and cute kittens for the next little while just to exorcise all the angst.
Mood:: 'depressed' depressed

I kinda loved that season b/c it was so dark - but I agree, it was if the writers wanted to quit but couldn't.

I'm still enjoying it, but I think watching it in one hit is not the best idea. All that concentrated angst tends to get to one after a while.

There were a lot of dark themes. I think that's why the Nerds were there. Even when Warren was going off the rails, Jonathan and Andrew were there to provide some much needed comic relief. I loved their geeky squabbles. And Spike threatening Boba Fett was genius. 'That design was flawed'. Oh, Andrew. *hearts*

Also on the upside, season 6 had the musical episode which was genius.

But yeah, a lot of unremitting doom and gloom. I'm not sure SMG was allowed to smile more than once every three episodes. Though when we originally saw it there was a week between episodes to get over it - no wonder you feel bad, chewing it all up in one weekend!

*sends you fluffy thoughts*

I love Once More With Feeling, and listening to Joss' commentary about it was fascinating. Plus, yeah, the Bobba Fett thing was priceless!

Yeah, I've noticed the lack of smiling. And I've also taken a break and moved onto Sports Night for a while to give myself a break. Thespis, I've found, is a wonderful cure-all *g*

Isn't this the season with the "musical"? I loved that episode as I believe it was the first one ever that I watched. My daughter, who had just broken up with her boyfriend (got dumped) was watching Buffy every night so I sort of couldn't avoid it. But the musical thing really got me hooked and being the obsessive compulsive sort that I am, had to start buying the seasons.

I kind of liked the Buffy/Spike scenes. Yes, yes, so very angsty but I guess it hit my mood dead on then too.

Good luck with your essay. Knock 'em dead kiddo!
