cash strapped

Prime Minister Rudd has been urging all Australians to spend up on goods and services as a means to help alleviate the economic downturn. On Friday I exercised my allegiance by spending $976 on my car. This included new tyres, a new drive shaft, full service, parts and labour. My savings account is looking a little sorry for itself at the moment, but I feel like I've just knitted socks for the Empire or something.

Having said that, my plans to buy the Robin of Sherwood complete series box set for my birthday has had to put on hold. I've just gone and spent two months worth of savings on my car, I have bills due and my rent is going up this month. Fannish spending is not high on the agenda at the moment.

It's all very well for you to encourage us to spend, Kev, but what's the point of it if one is not going to have any fun doing so?

Robin of Sherwood? With Michael Praed?

[identity profile] laylee.livejournal.com 2009-03-01 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that one. If the intertubes had been around when it was fist screened on TV in Australia, the world would still be awash with my adolescent, frighteningly derivative, Mary-Sueish fanfic because I loved it just that much. I've been meaning to buy it on DVD for years and finally decided to do so this year when the car bill from hell landed in my lap.

*sigh*

That's the best Robin EVER! I loved everybody, Robin, Marion, Little John, Nasir... I didn't like it much when Jason Connery replaced Michael Praed though, it wasn't as good after that. Oh, and I loved the music!

I quite like Jason Connery, partially because I've always had a huge crush on his dad, and partially because he's half Australian which is also kinda cool. But mostly I was crushing on Ray Winstone as Will Scarlet and didn't care who played Robin as long as Will stuck around :P

and my rent is going up this month.

the reason I haven't contacted my agent about renewing of lease. He mentioned that landlord want to increase the rent by $50 per week with the new lease, I was too busy to arrange to sign it in December and he suggested we do it after the holidays and I said ok. He didn't contact me after the holidays despite me telling him when I was back, so I'm just gonna play dumb for as long as I can get away with it. :P

And you know what? I want to go out and shop! I have giftcards, damn it! I just need the bloody motivation and energy to go out to do it!

I've been on a month-to-month here since 2002, but it hasn't stopped them from putting the rent up four or five times. They can do it whether you're on a lease or not, just as long as they give you three months notice. My only advantage is if I do want to move I only have to give four weeks notice and that's it. Why can't we have 99 year leases like they do in Europe, that's what I want to know??

That sort of necessary spending is not fun at all, even if it is the right thing to do :~(

We're in the same position. We want to support ailing businesses, but I don't get paid much, Judy's pay rise amounted to about £14 a month, the new sink was nearly £300, the gas bill was £600 ...

... um, at least we're supporting the gas company and a local plumber ...?

I was just saying today, every time I get a pay rise the taxman takes an larger cut to 'contribute' toward my education and I end up with less than I had before. I think I was better off as a level 4 than I am as a level 7!

I bought season 1 of RoS late last year. I used to *love* watching it and the first time I saw it at JB had an OMG *want* moment and gave in. That isn't to say I've watched any of it yet *g* but I have it!

I've been meaning to buy the series for years and finally decided to lash out on the complete series box set from amazon.com. Then new tyres happened and, well...
