The weather today has been miserably cold and wet. I was going to ride to work but changed my mind at the last minute when I opened my front door and saw that it was pouring. Thank god the bus was running five minutes late, that's all I can say. But it didn't stop me from going to gym after work for a quick 40 minute cardio session and some crunches. After that I came home and had the most enormous dinner of grilled chicken and steamed vegies. With all that good food and exercise I should be feeling all virtuous if it weren't for the fact that I stuffed my face with Scotch Finger and Nice biscuits at the training session I attended today :~\

However judging by the rain pelting down at the moment I shouldn't even contemplate using my bike as transport tomorrow and will drive to work instead. I want to go to gym again (third day running!) and while I could do what I did today - get the bus home then drive over to Fitzroy - but I'm more likely to get there if I take my stuff with me and go straight after work. My motivational levels are quite high at the moment, but the weather is a big downer and usually at this time of year once I get home, I'm home for the night.

Speaking of transport my car registration notice turned up in the mail today and I am sure it's at least $50 more than it was last year. Did they put the fees up without me noticing? I bet you they did, the bastards.

*grumps*

In news not related to driving or exercise, inspired by [livejournal.com profile] zebra363 I am having a go at making sourdough bread. I found a recipe in an old copy of Better Homes and Gardens magazine at gym the other day1 so I stole it and have been conscientiously feeding my starter for the past three days. When I checked on it this morning it was so huge I had to transfer it to a slightly bigger bowl, which I hope hasn't disturbed it too much. I have one more day of feeding to go and then on Thursday I can bake. I'm already planning on starting work early so can go home at 4pm to muck around with flour and give it its requisite five hours or rising time. If all goes well I will be feasting on lovely fresh bread for breakfast the next day. Or else tossing a rock-hard lump of foul tasting dough into the bin with many muttered curses.

Eeep, posting has started over at [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang 2009! OMG, so much fic, so little time!!

1Okay, so it's slightly related to exercise, but only slightly.

Prime Minister Rudd has been urging all Australians to spend up on goods and services as a means to help alleviate the economic downturn. On Friday I exercised my allegiance by spending $976 on my car. This included new tyres, a new drive shaft, full service, parts and labour. My savings account is looking a little sorry for itself at the moment, but I feel like I've just knitted socks for the Empire or something.

Having said that, my plans to buy the Robin of Sherwood complete series box set for my birthday has had to put on hold. I've just gone and spent two months worth of savings on my car, I have bills due and my rent is going up this month. Fannish spending is not high on the agenda at the moment.

It's all very well for you to encourage us to spend, Kev, but what's the point of it if one is not going to have any fun doing so?

I don't seem to be posting very much these days and the more I don't post the more I feel like I've got nothing to talk about. In fact I haven't been on LJ very much at all of late and I'm beginning to wonder if I should fork out for a paid account anymore. My fanish activity has dropped down to practically nil, I'm not posting very much and I hardly have time to keep up with my flist at the moment. The only thing that would stop me from moving down to an unpaid account is the fact that I couldn't manage [livejournal.com profile] snarchive any more, which would be sad because I am rather find of it, even if it hasn't seen much activity of late.

However I have been doing things like going to costume parties, knocking myself out at gym, working, of course, hanging out with best work friend while at work and attending a lesbian hens night. I've also been spending quite a lot of time with the kids and they never fail to amuse. Especially little Miss M who, on Tuesday, became an official walkie-talkie when she decided that it's far more practical to walk when wearing a pretty frock than it is to crawl. Next thing you know she'll be borrowing the keys to the car :~\

Tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday and to celebrate I'm making potato pancakes with smoked salmon for dinner. I bought all the accouterments tonight and will head straight home to start cooking after work. I have the technology. I can build it!

I am currently carless because Delia is in the old home town being serviced. This is both a good and a bad thing. Good, because having no car forces me to be more active, but bad because on the weekend I have to go up to the old home town again to pick her up. This will be the fourth week in a row that I've schlepped up there and my carpet is screaming to be vacuumed. It's a sorry state of affairs when one is hankering to do housework but events conspire to keep one from dragging out the duster and setting-to.

My life is so exciting :~|

I know a lot of people might consider this to be blasphemy, but thank god the weekend is over. I had the nephew's fifth birthday and as usual Saturday was spent in a flurry of preparing things, including the cake, and then came Sunday and the big day and while it was fun, it was also damn hard work. No wonder I fell asleep in my sister's bed at three in the afternoon.

However F's party was great and things did get off to a ripping start with the delivery of an early birthday gift of a copy of French Provincial Cooking by Elizabeth David from [livejournal.com profile] phoebesmum. Mmm, Gateau aux Chocolat et aux Amandes. Simply divine!

You must read this, it's just wonderful: Proved by Your Conviction, Supernatural gen by [livejournal.com profile] kroki_refur, rated PG-13. Sam Winchester walks out of Martin Wyatt’s classroom one day late in 1997 and never walks back in again. Except that's not entirely true.

I am currently driving my mum's big blue Magna Executive because I left Delia in the old home town for a service. The Magna is huge, much bigger than anything I'm used to driving. But that's not what I'm worried about. What I'm worried about is the inevitable phone call from the mechanic who will proceed to tell me that, to keep Delia going for another twelve months, I am going to have to get about $1000 worth of repairs. That's what I'm worried about. Therefore I am on a very lean budget this week. Very lean indeed with no room for extras. This week's gonna suck.

I really need to do my dishes. But what else is new?

  • I rode my bike to work today. It took around twenty five minutes to get there. If I'd driven or gotten the bus, it would have taken hour because the traffic really was that insane.

  • [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl posted a very interesting article today that really pinged a few things for me. I'm sure many of you saw it on Mal's journal, or have read it elsewhere, but it's totally worth a repeat visit: Care For Your Introvert.

  • I have no less than four birthday events to attend in the next three weeks; dinner for friend A on Friday, cocktail party for sister-in-law C on Saturday, bowling for nephew F Sunday week and a fancy dress party for friends A&M the weekend after next. I need to start taking vitamins NOW!

  • For C's birthday I'm getting my hair cut and straightened for the evening. I've already picked out my outfit for the party, but now I'm worried it won't go with straight hair. Maybe I should chose a back-up dress just in case...?

  • Speaking of birthdays, mine is next month and I'm already considering a couple of celebratory options. Yeah, I know I've still got six weeks to go, but the sort of thing I have in mind requires organizing people and making bookings so the sooner I get started the better.

  • With the (really) hot weather last week, all the trees in my street suddenly went into drought survival mode and have been shedding leaves like nobody's business. It looks more like the middle of autumn in Y Avenue at the moment, not the middle of summer.

  • My car is so dirty I'm almost ashamed to be seen in it. Before I go the the hairdresser on Saturday, I'm taking Delia to the hand car wash in Heidelberg road and buying her the full treatment. She gets me to where I need to go so it's the least I can do.

  • I'm currently watching the first episode of Lie To Me. Tim Roth is, of course, fabulous, but I'm also liking Keli Williams a hell of a lot more than I did when she was in The Practice. I think it's the natty tailored shift dresses she's wearing. I love a natty tailored shift.

  • There are still no Winchesters on my TV. This is very sad-making.

  • In conclusion, chocolate cake! )
