Hello everyone!

*waves*

I'm still around, even though it's been about a month since I last posted.

Life has been going along apace. I've been working, of course, hanging out with small children, watching large amounts of Chuck and Life, but not baking or sewing much. I still have no internet access at home, but I have been reading many more books because of it. I went to Queensland for a conference, lost my voice when a virus I picked up at work turned into laryngitis, oh and I was homeless for a week!

Homeless, you say?

Well, yes. Sort of.

What happened was while I was in Queensland my hot water service had a fit and started leaking. And because I was away no one noticed until it started to drip down into my downstairs neighbour's kitchen. You can imagine how excited I was to get THAT phone call in the middle of a session at the conference. Anyway, there wasn't much I could do since I was in Queensland and not due to fly home until Sunday, so I left it to the real estate agent to deal with and spent a relaxing couple of days at friend R's house, all the while thinking I'd come home to a slightly damp carpet and a new hot water service.

Well, nothing prepared me for the swamp smell that greeted me when I finally got home Sunday night. or the fact that the carpet in my bedroom was saturated. None of my belongings was damaged, thank god, but the whole place was pretty much uninhabitable. All I could do was grab some clothes to wear to work in the morning and head over to my brother's house in Sunshine for the night.

A new hot water service was installed fairly quickly, but it took nearly a week for the carpet to be replaced. In the mean time I had to pack half my flat in preparation for the new carpet and oh wot fun it was not trying to squeeze all my books and DVDs into my tiny kitchen and bathroom. While all this was happening I continued to live out of suitcase, returning home only to check my mail, pack my books and collect fresh socks and undies. I lasted two days in Sunshine before the commute to work got to me and then best work friend took pity on me and let me stay with her in Brunswick for the rest of the week. She headed off to the country to see her boyfriend on the weekend, and so I got to hang out with her dad, who shares the house with her, which was fun because K is a really cool dad. And since he was at work both Saturday and Sunday I even had some badly needed alone time.

However while A's generous offer of her home was much appreciated, you have no idea how pleased I was to open the door to my flat on Tuesday to find the new, mushroom-coloured carpet on my floor and the complete absence of swamp smell. I still haven't finished unpacking all my staff and the carpet feels kind of cheap and nylon-y under my bare feet, but I'm home and sleeping in my own bed for the first time in two weeks and it's bliss!

  • Jensen Ackles and his long-time girl friend, Danneel Harris, have announced their engagement. Congratulations to the happy couple! And now let us all just sit back and watch the SPN fandom implode because one of the boys has dared to have a personal life :~\
  • I watched Star Trek: Rebooted the other day and now I'm all about Spock/Uhura. What's up with that
  • I'm in the old home town for a couple of days and so I took the girls to their play group this morning while my sister ran a few errands. This afternoon I picked F up from kindergarten and then I had to put up with listening to the Whiniest Kid on the Planet as I rummaged through a bin full of fabric remnants at the Salvation Army opp shop. I also nearly cut off the top of my left ring finger when I adjusted my mum's fan this evening. None of these things are necessarily related to each other.
  • Why did no one tell me that D.B. Sweeney was doing a couple of guest spots on Criminal Minds this season? I would have set the VCR!
  • I wish they'd have more scenes in The Big Bang Theory where Leonard is just wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Johnny Galecki has a pretty nice bod under all those layers.
  • It took a while for summer to arrive, but now that is has it's here with a vengeance!
  • I just got a very odd email from Best Work Friend's mother about plans to catch up with her and A's stepdad on the weekend. I was sure I hadn't made any such arrangement, but my mind isn't what it used to be so it could be that I'd forgotten something. Then K emailed me again, saying that she sent the message to the wrong Laylee, but for a minute there I was really worried about impending senility!
  • My finger really hurts!

At last I can begin a post with 'feeling much better, thanks very much!'

After the nadir that was Thursday, I woke up on Friday feeling much less fuddle-headed and with a nose I could almost breathe through. The annoying cough is still there, I still blow my nose every five minutes and I get tired quite easily, but at least I don't feel like I'm dying any more. I even ventured out of the house for a couple of drinks with A&O last night. Of course after two light beers I'd pretty much tapped all my energy reserves and I was home by 11PM, but at least it's a start on the road to recovery, yeah?

*makes affirmative hand-wavy gestures*

So I guess it's back to work on Monday. Bah! Although I do kind of miss it. Best work friend rang me yesterday going, 'Why aren't you back at work yet?' and I said 'Because I'm still sick?' and she was like, 'That's no excuse, I miss you!'

Awww, made me feel all warm and fuzzy, that did.

I'll see her today, anyway, at mutual friend K's birthday get together, which should be rather pleasant. We're going to the North Fitzroy Star hotel which has a wonderful menu and a fabulous wine list. It will be good to interact with real people again and not just those I randomly meet at the doctor's surgery or the chemist, which has been the total extent of my social life for the last few days.

It is unbelievably windy tonight and blowing a gale right outside my bedroom window. And speaking of bed, mine has nice clean sheets and soft, enticing pillows so I think I'll head there right about now.

Meh, I've been feeling out of sorts all week, largely, I think, because of that guy. Which is stupid because I shouldn't let people get to me that way, and yet they do. It didn't help that yesterday we have to deal with The Most Annoying Law Student On Earth. He rang my department no less than five times to check on the progress of his requests, despite the fact that he knows it takes three working days to supply most items and that putting a need-by date of today (Saturday)is a little futile considering ILL isn't open over the weekend. He also drove the staff on the telephone inquiry service to distraction with incessant phone calls that ultimately got him no where because we are not miracle workers! I was so drained by the end of the day it was a wonder I was able to stay upright on my bike on the way home.

But it's Saturday now and it's a beautiful sunny day. As soon as my washing is finished I am going to cycle over to Station street for coffee and newspapers, then pop across to Carlton where the coat shop near work is having a sale. I have K's birthday dinner tonight in Chinatown and a side offer to drop in on best work friend and mutual fried H if the post-dinner karaoke becomes a little too much. Tomorrow I'm having coffee with A&O and then it will be Monday again, but I'm hoping that TMLSoE's articles will be waiting in the Ariel station first thing and we can be rid of him for the moment.

Also, for the first time in ages I have a fic rec! All you C6D peeps must go forht and read 1500 Kilometers (& A Caboose) by [livejournal.com profile] ariastar, a due South/My Life As A Dog crossover wherein Benton Fraser is soundly beaten at table hockey by a twelve year-old boy and learns the power of communication.

yay, m y washing is finished and coffee awaits!

My first day back at work was not unpleasant. Having to get up at 7.30 when I'd gotten used to sleeping in until nine was a bit of a shock to the system, but I got over that, especailly when I got to work and found the 'Welcome Back Glorious Leader!' sign the troops had made for me on my PC. It really made my day and I hope they don't take it back after we've done the performance reviews later in the week.

In more amusing news, at the brother-in-law's party on the weekend, one of my sister's friends thought that best work friend and I were a couple! I'm not quite sure how she got hold of that particular stick, but we've been laughing about it ever since because M probably had to work up a lot of courage to say something. Then we went and crushed her by proclaiming our enduring heterosexuality. I even have a date on Wednesday!

Supernatural is killing me right now. Really, it is. The rift between Sam and Dean is just, so gah! and DTs Sam is not a pretty sight. Ruby is such a bitch, but then again Castiel is also being pretty bitchy at the moment. Bobby, however, is awesome, which is just how it should be.

All of a sudden I am either very hungry or very tired. Bit of both, I think. Maybe I'll have some hot chocolate an go to bed.

Had a sleepover at best work friend's house last night and what did I spy sitting on her TV unit when I got there? Sports Night DVDS!

She'd borrowed them off our mutual friend K a few days ago but had yet to start watching them, so of course I felt it was my duty to insist that we put the first disc on IMMEDIATELY!

We started with the pilot which, yeah, isn't the best ep ever, but A likes to start at the beginning with these things so that's where we began. And what was the first thing that came out of her mouth when Dan and Casey appeared on the screen?

"Are they boyfriends?"

OMG, words cannot...!!!

So of course I made her skip forward to Thespis after that, which only confirmed her suspicions, especailly when Casey admitted that he gave up his marriage to work with Dan. Then I made her cry by going back to The Apology. She doesn't like Casey very much and thinks he's a bit of an ass (which he is) but she thinks Danny is divine!

Hooray, another fangirl is born!
