I was watching The Bill, but the shrieking teenage girl who is tonight's main protagonist was giving me a headache so changed over to Iron Chef instead. Tonight's theme ingredient is shitake mushrooms. Mmmm, mushrooms...♥

Anyhoo, after my traumatic (embarrassing?) morning, the day turned out to be not so bad after all. I did a whole pile of laundry, went to Organic Gertrude for breakfast where I ran into my friend A and her husband, found a new supplier for my current favourite chocolate confection and paid a highly successful visit to a little bric-a-brac shop in Brunswick. There I found a mint condition powder compact, never used and complete with the little cloth cover it would have arrived in from Germany.

I also found some fabulous vintage fabric to make a cute summer dress, and this wonderful old coat pattern by Vogue which I am totally making for next winter.

I want it in red, with a pair of black gloves, black, glace kid heels and a matching handbag. Very Doris Day.

Speaking of shoes, I finally found a pair to wear with my new dress for my sister's part next week. They're a colour I don't usually go for, but when I tried them on with the dress they worked so well I couldn't say no.

Right, now I'm going to finish making cupcakes, do the dishes and then ice the cakes with rosewater glace icing. How yummy will they be???

That compact reminds me so strongly of my grandmother - she had a very similar one - and the smell of her powder that I could cry.

I keep wondering about getting back into making clothes, and the allure of vintage dress patterns...

Have we seen the dress to go with the shoes? So that we can make a proper assessment...

I had a couple of cute compacts years ago but they just lost in the shuffle when I moved to Melbourne. Lately I've been carrying around a mirror compact that someone gave me for my birthday, but I could resist that one when I saw it. It's so chic!

I couldn't even tell you the number of vintage patterns I own. Several large boxes worth is my best estimate. I keep telling myself 'No more patterns!' but then I stumble across treasure like that coat and, well...

No, I haven't photographed the dress. I will do so ASAP for proper flist assessment.

I don't wear powder, but I will look very smart when I whip that compact out of my bag to retouch my lipstick. Tres chic!

I've never tried shi... what you said mushrooms. I would like to be more adventurous, but I'm not, truthfully, that great a cook and fear I would spend a fortune on exotic ingredients only to turn out something inedible. But I do love mushrooms pretty much in general. Mmmmm.

Coat, compact and shoes are all equally fabulous, and so will be the cupcakes, I am sure. I made parkin last night, which is oats/treacle/ginger, and v good for winter - also very filling.

Shitake mushrooms are very like ordinary ones, only with a more intense flavour. They're great for making mushroom soup, or if you grind the dried ones in a spice grinder you can use the powder to flavour soup and stir fries and casseroles.

Yes, I watch a lot of cooking shows. Why do you ask?

I'm a bit worried about the shoes because I haven't had time to break them in. I'll take a back-up pair just in case, but I hope they behave and I won't have to worry about changing.

Would gel insoles help? You can get some that're specially designed for high heels. 'Party feet', I think they're called, and I have no doubt that they are originally American and probably available everywhere. I haven't tried them, as my high-heel days are long behind me. In fact, my next foot-related outlay is likely to be for corn plasters. OH, THE GLAMOUR.

I am a big fan of the gel insoles, have been for quite some time. They really to make wearing heels easier! However it's the blister factor I'm more worried about. I have a spot on my right foot that is especailly prone to blisters, even in shoes I've been wearing for ages and I really do need a few wears to break a pair in before an event, something I'm just not going to have time for between now and Saturday :~(

I would, but I can't be assed at the moment. Also, I got a blister on the weekend from a pair of FLATS! No shoes are safe, not at all.

This is a sad state of affairs. Most shoes make my legs ache, but that's just an age thing. I foresee support tights in my near future. Yup, it just gets better and better.

I meant also to ask about the rosewater icing. Just rosewater and icing sugar, or other stuff too?

The recipe is icing sugar, milk mixed with a little melted butter and a dash of rosewater. Mix until smooth and then place the bowl over a pan of simmering water and stir until spreading consistency. The quantities really depend on how much icing you need. I mostly just guessimate and add the liquid only a little at a time until I think it's right. I wanted to make it pink as well, but I used up the last of my cochineal the last time I made cake.

I love my couch. It was the first piece of furniture I owned that wasn't secondhand or a hand-me-down. I'm sitting on it right this moment with my feet propped up on the matching ottoman!
