It's a public holiday in Melbourne today, one of the few that my work actually gives us, and so I celebrated by getting up early and making rhubarb and ginger jam. Bread and jam is never better than when the jam is warm out of the pot it was made in. I've also done the dishes, made coffee, watched an episode of of Magnum PI (and oh my, didn't the guys wear short shorts back in 1980!) and phaffed around on teh intertubes for a while. It's been a pretty successful day off so far and I haven't even gotten dressed yet!

My next trick will be a trip to the gymnasium and a wander around Brunswick St for a while. After that I'll come home and bottle the jam and then have a go at making crumpets. Yes, crumpets! I found a recipe last night and really want to give it a go. Plus, now that I have all this jam I need something to eat it with. And my sourdough won't be ready until Thursday because it takes five days for the starter to ferment.

I've also been spending a large amount of time at the Spence St DFO the last couple of days, shopping for FIVE HOURS with A & H on Saturday and returning a dress that looked way better in the shop than it did when I got it home on Sunday. I didn't buy much either day, but on Saturday I found a cute hippy-esque tunic that can double as a beach dress in the summer as well as the one I returned, and when I went back yesterday I found a pair of boots to replace my favourites that died this time last year and a new pair of sneakers for gym. The boots look a little like this:

There was a couple of other pairs of shoes in the same shop that I really loved. It would be bad of me to go back and buy them, right?

Yeah.

Last night they screened the recent Ballet Shoes telemovie on ABC. I must now re-read the book to remind myself when I loved it so as a child, because god knows those whiny brats on my TV screen in no way resembled the characters I desperately wanted to be when I was ten.

Ah Castle, gotta love him...

Happy Saint Patrick's Day everyone! I wore green today, did you?

I had a burst of nostalgia on the weekend when I found my old copy of Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield in a bookcase at my mum's house, and oops, I'd forgotten that I stole it from the library at my old school. I am such a bad librarian!

I loved that book when I was young(er). Like many girls I had dreams of becoming a prima ballerina while I was growing up and I did take dance classes for a few years before I realised that my talents lay elsewhere. I still love the ballet, though, and go whenever I can. And reading this book the other day brought back a lot of fond memories of leaping about the house in my leotard and ballet slippers to my parents classical records.

*iz a giant dork*

Meanwhile it's still hotter than hades around here, but the bureau of meteorology assure us that the cool change is on its way and the rest of the week will be in the mid to high twenties, as opposed to the current mid to high thirties. I'll believe it when I have to put on a cardi against the evening chill.

One week until I jet off to Perth and I feel like I cannot possibly go until I clean my entire flat from top to bottom. I've been scurrying around since I got home from work, putting things away, changing the sheets and folding laundry. I'm about to do the dishes, and after that I'll sweep mop the kitchen floor and hang my sheets on the line to dry.

Why is it that I only get this urge to spring clean when it's hotter than hell?
